OLYMPIA – Upon review of the initial set of applicants for the expanded Board of Health, the Thurston County Board of Commissioners are seeking additional community members to apply for a consumer of public health member representation on the expanded Board of Health.

The category consists of county residents who self-identify as having faced significant health inequities or as having lived experiences with public health related programs such as: the special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants, and children; the supplemental nutrition program; home visiting; or treatment services.

“This position represents an important community voice, and we want to make sure we have that voice on the new expanded Board of Health,” said Tye Menser, Board of Health Chair. “We have some great applicants for the other position, and want to take a little more time to find for additional applicants to really meet the intent of this last position.”

Background

The BoCC voted unanimously on an ordinance to expand the BoH during their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, April 19, 2022. The expansion was adopted to comply with the new law enacted by Engrossed Second Substitute House Bill (ESSHB) 1152 amending RCW 70.05, requiring the expansion of local public health districts and boards across the state. The full Thurston County Ordinance can be found here.

The BoH, which meets the second Tuesday of every month, is the supervisory body for public health in Thurston County as outlined in Chapter 70.05 RCW. Members of the board will not receive compensation or reimbursement of expenses for the performance of their duties.

How to Apply
