A subcommittee of the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) held its second of four weekly meetings today regarding the current project plan of renovating the Thurston County Courthouse Campus. The subcommittee discussed a number of items, including facility needs, hybrid options, and other related costs.

At today’s meeting, the subcommittee discussed:

  • Facility needs - Despite several upgrades to the current courthouse facility over the years, there are significant mechanical and operational needs that must be addressed for the courthouse to continue operating. Significant architectural needs include roof replacement and outdated and poor performing HVAC systems, along with outdated technology.
  • Options for consideration - The subcommittee heard potential hybrid options to consider for the courthouse project, including new construction, lease to own, or establishing a public private partnership.
  • Related costs – The subcommittee was informed of potential costs associated with a new construction project. The cost projects only include the design and construction, assuming the construction occurs during 2028.

The subcommittee then went into executive session, to consider the selection of a site or the acquisition of real estate by lease or purchase when public knowledge regarding such consideration would cause a likelihood of increased price. The subcommittee directed staff to do additional research with the county’s commercial broker.

The subcommittee will meet weekly for the next two weeks, with its next meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 11, at the Atrium, 3000 Pacific, Olympia. All meetings are open to the public and will be recorded by Zoom.
