Hazardous Weather Alert - Extra outreach and cool centers for extreme heat

OLYMPIA – The upcoming extreme weather is dangerous for those without shelter.

The National Weather Service has issued a forecast for temperatures over 91 degrees in the Puget Sound for Sunday, May 14, and Monday, May 15, 2023. Therefore, Thurston County will declare a two-day, two-night Hazardous Weather Event. During this extreme heat, Thurston County Homeless Service Providers will provide multiple options for individuals living outside to stay hydrated and find cool places to be during the day. 

  • Day Time Cooling Activities: A daytime cooling center will be available from 1:00pm-7:00pm Sunday, May 14 and Monday, May 15. 
  • Increased Shelter-in-Place Activities: Partners in Prevention Education will also be providing increased distribution of survival supplies to individuals and families living in encampments. 

Emergency Cooling Center will be in operation Sunday, May 14, and Monday, May 15 from 1:00pm - 7:00pm at Sergio’s Place located at 3444 Martin Way NE, for individuals needing to shelter during the hottest parts of the day. Donations of water, sunscreen, aloe, sports drinks, and snacks will be accepted Sunday, May 14, and Monday, May 15, 2023, from 1:00pm – 7:00pm at Sergio’s Place at 3444 Martin Way NE. If you would like to donate survival goods, please contact Sam Bubenzer at Interfaith Works – Sergio’s Place at 360-706-2287.

Other Emergency Hazardous Weather Shelter options are available at Union Gospel Mission for single adults. Family Support Center's Pear Blossom Place is available for families with children seeking shelter and Community Youth Services is available for youth ages 18-24.
