Thurston County Announces New Leadership Appointment

OLYMPIA – Thurston County is pleased to announce the appointment of three key leadership positions within the organization. A competitive recruitment was conducted for each position. These appointments reflect the county’s commitment to promoting talented individuals and fostering a strong, diverse leadership team.

 “We are excited to announce the appointment of these three exceptional people to leadership positions within Thurston County,” said County Manager Leonard Hernandez. “Each of these individuals brings a wealth of experience and a passion for public service. I am confident that they will continue to make significant contributions to our organization and our community.”

Summer Miller has been formally appointed as the Budget and Fiscal Manager in the Commissioners’ Office. With extensive experience in financial management and a proven track record of success, Miller is well-equipped to oversee the county’s fiscal operations. “Summer has stabilized the budget, created efficiencies, and built financial systems that have put the department into a position of continued accuracy and forecasting,” said Hernandez. “Her expertise and dedication will be invaluable to our organization.”

Ashley Arai has been appointed as the Director of Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED). With a diverse background in land use planning and a strong commitment to community development, Arai is uniquely qualified to lead CPED. “Ashley’s extensive land use planning experience will be instrumental in balancing the needs of our community,” said Hernandez. “We are fortunate to have her on the Thurston County team.”

Dr. Jennifer Freiheit has been named the new Director of Public Health and Social Services. With over 20 years of industry experience and a deep understanding of the department’s operations, Dr. Freiheit is well-positioned to lead the department into the future. “Jen has proven herself to be a dedicated, collaborative leader,” said Hernandez. “Her expertise, communication, and leadership skills will be instrumental as we work to improve the health and well-being of our community.”

Thurston County is confident that these three leaders will continue to elevate the organization and serve the community with distinction. 

The county extends its warmest congratulations to Summer, Ashley, and Jen on their well-deserved appointments.
