Thurston County Declares Hazardous Weather Event due to Excessive Heat

OLYMPIA – The National Weather Service has issued a forecast for temperatures over 99 degrees in the Puget Sound for the coming week. Thurston County has declared a three-day, three-night Hazardous Weather Event.

During this extreme heat, Thurston County Homeless Service Providers and City of Olympia staff will provide multiple options for individuals living outside to stay hydrated and find cool places to be during the day.

  • Day Time Cooling Activities: A daytime cooling center will be available from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 12, through Friday, August 13.
  • Increased Shelter-In-Place Activities: Partners in Prevention Education will also be providing increased distribution of survival supplies to individuals and families living in encampments. 

The cooling center will require masks for all staff and attendees, maintaining at least six feet of distance from others, and a limited number of guests will be allowed in the cooling center at a time to reduce the possibility of disease transmission. Hazardous weather response activities will be focused on shelter-in-place survival gear distribution.

The Emergency Cooling Center will operate Thursday, August 12, through Friday, August 13, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at 201 NW State Ave. Services will be available for individuals needing to shelter during the hottest parts of the day. Donations of water, sunscreen, and aloe will be accepted Wednesday – Friday from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. at 201 NW Capitol Way. If you would like to donate survival goods, please contact Kim Kondrat with the City of Olympia at 360-742-6448.

Other Emergency Hazardous Weather Shelter options are available at Family Support Center's Pear Blossom Place for families with children seeking shelter, and Community Youth Services is available for youth ages 18-24.
