Thurston County Historic Commission Announces 2nd Annual Heritage Day

OLYMPIA – The Thurston County Historic Commission is pleased to announce Alex Gradwohl with the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation as the guest speaker for the 2nd Annual Thurston County Heritage Day, scheduled for Saturday, September 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be held virtually.
In honor of Thurston County's maritime heritage, Gradwohl will provide a short presentation about maritime history in the region before taking questions from participants. Learn about the Marine Heritage Area, what it means to the Salish Sea region and the preservation of Thurston County history. You will also learn about how indigenous people are involved and how local groups can be active in maritime issues.

Gradwohl manages several initiatives for the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation, including the Historic Cemetery Grant Program and Maritime Washington National Heritage Area.
After the presentation, participants will have an opportunity to learn about the Thurston County Historic Commission's annual Heritage Grant Program and hear from previous grantees. Historic preservation organizations in Thurston County have an opportunity to apply for grants of up to $5,000 for historic preservation projects in Thurston County. Background
The Thurston County Historic Commission is responsible for promoting and conducting public information, education, and interpretive programs pertaining to county history and county cultural resources. This includes identifying and promoting the preservation of historic resources, organizing events – such as Heritage Day – and increasing awareness of our national, state, and county heritage.
