1L intern duties will include legal research and writing (specifically motion practice), supplemental client meetings and interviews, and special research and advocacy projects as suggested by staff and designed by the student. 1L interns will also have extensive opportunities to observe courtroom proceedings.
2L and 3L Rule 9 interns and externs will also work on legal research and writing, but will spend a significant amount of time in court. Courtroom experience includes first appearance calendars, pretrial hearings, motion practice, and second-chair trial experience.
Candidates should have a strong interest in criminal law generally and indigent defense specifically. Candidates should be outgoing and comfortable with courtroom appearances. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to public interest work.
